Gore-TEX and other waterproof breathable fabrics with ePTFE membranes have long dominated the market, but recently polyurethane and polyester membranes are quickly catching up and pushing the envelope when it comes to breathability.
Breathability is an integral component of outdoor clothing. Breathable clothing allows your sweat to escape while keeping moisture out of insulation that would otherwise reduce efficiency and cause chills.
1. Waterproof
Reliable waterproof clothing is essential when adventuring outdoors; without it, you could quickly become drenched and cold. But even when layering up, having base layers such as merino wool wick away moisture to keep you dry while maintaining temperature regulation and prevent odor build-up – plus they’re even abrasion-resistant to protect you in rugged terrain environments!
Waterproof/breathable fabrics provide protection from precipitation while still allowing your sweat vapor to escape, keeping you comfortable during high intensity activities like hiking and backpacking. They’re an excellent option.
Waterproof fabrics typically consist of an outer fabric laminated to a membrane such as PTFE or the new ePE, which makes for easy maintenance, durability and lightweightness. While they’re great for outdoor activities thanks to being non-recyclable due to petroleum components used in production, waterproof fabrics cannot be recycled due to not being recyclable and require special coating to help beads up and roll off during precipitation (known as durable water repellent or DWR), and tend to be more costly than similar fabrics.
2. Breathable
Breathable fabrics allow moisture vapor to escape and keep you feeling comfortable during high-intensity outdoor activities. Moisture vapor acts as the body’s natural cooling mechanism, so its release must be permitted to prevent heat buildup and discomfort.
Fabric construction and weight, along with the size and density of pores within any material, determine its breathability. A higher Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate rating (which measures the amount of moisture vapor that passes through in 24 hours) indicates more breathable fabric.
Your outdoor wardrobe should include clothing made of breathable, waterproof materials like Gore-Tex, Neo Shell or eVent. Specifically, look for jackets and pants made from Gore-Tex, Neo Shell or eVent that is waterproof in areas where shoulders and arms will sweat most while remaining highly breathable in chest, back, abdomen areas where sweat accumulates most. In terms of pants you need waterproof butt and lower leg protection while remaining breathable elsewhere; for additional wind protection on uphill terrain consider adding something like Patagonia Houdini Hoody or Arcteryx Squamish Hoody to your ensemble for ultimate protection against elements when facing off against elements.
3. Lightweight
As seasons change, finding gear that provides warmth and comfort without bulk is of utmost importance. Lightweight outdoor garments provide the ideal solution, designed specifically to keep you warm and agile during outdoor adventures.
Waterproof-breathable designs are an ideal way for those exploring the wilderness to stay comfortable; their fabric works to block out precipitation while still allowing sweat vapor from perspiration to escape. Furthermore, their breathability helps regulate temperature to keep you comfortable no matter the climate you find yourself in.
Lightweight women’s outdoor jackets are essential gear for any adventurer. Make a thoughtful present for someone you care about by giving one that can serve them on every excursion and hike they embark upon! Combine with waterproof boots for dry feet, or pair with a cozy fleece for additional insulation. Also don’t forget Nikwax waterproofing soap as an efficient cleaner which can restore outerwear back into top condition before your next adventure!
4. Comfortable
Comfortable outdoor gear is essential to making outdoor activities more enjoyable, particularly during extended bouts of exertion. Quality clothing prioritizes comfort with features like pockets in convenient spots and quality zippers and moisture-wicking fabrics to manage moisture.
Polyester, nylon or merino wool base layers provide excellent moisture wicking to protect you against overheating and chafing during long hikes and strenuous adventures. Plus, they dry quickly so you’re more comfortable while staying active!
Outdoor pants designed for hiking, running and climbing should provide adequate stretch for full range of motion. OR Helium pants offer excellent breathability and waterproof protection in wet environments; featuring durable ripstop fabric with 14% spandex content and light packability so they’re easily carried in a backpack on longer treks. Other key comfort elements to look out for in outdoor gear include having good coverage hoods; drawcord cinch around calves with adjustable cuffs; moisture-wicking socks as well as moisture-wicking socks – among others.
