Search for tents with wide doors and vestibules that provide easy access and privacy, as well as models featuring mesh windows and vents to facilitate airflow without compromising weather protection.
Check the fabrics used to construct the tent’s floor, canopy and rainfly for durability before purchasing an ultralight tent. When considering fabrics with 15-denier Nylon or Polyester density ratings for durability. Thinner materials won’t stand up as well.
1. REI Wonderland 6
The Wonderland 6 packs down into an easily manageable size and pitching process is straightforward. It provides plenty of space, air circulation, two large doors, tarp flooring, storage pockets and useful features such as two large doors. Unfortunately there is no vestibule; so to give shoes and gear extra room you must purchase the $125 Mud Room accessory instead.
For families camping together in large numbers, the Wonderland tent is an excellent choice. But for rough weather camping conditions, more traditional dome-style tents such as REI Base Camp 4 may be better suited. These models feature more vertical walls that make them better suited to windy environments.
2. Nemo Aurora Highrise 6
NEMO packs a lot of features into its roomy tent. Its large standing height design easily accommodates two single mattresses, while the rain-protected windows offer ample ventilation and great views. Plus, its top-of-the-line YKK Aquaguard zippers and dual vestibules offer gear storage space. NEMO also features an ingenious nightlight pocket on its ceiling made with fabric designed to diffuse headlamp light while simultaneously eliminating blue light emissions – an impressive touch!
At its price point, the Aurora Highrise tent is quite durable. Featuring crisscrossing pole shapes with 13 millimeter aluminum poles and thick 68D polyester/No-See-Um mesh/tubular polyurethane rainfly for weatherproof performance; an included footprint helps protect floors from rough surfaces while increasing longevity; all in all it’s difficult to find such an impressive product at this price point!
3. Coleman Sundome 4
This tent offers great value at its price point. It can fit two queen-sized air mattresses with plenty of room left over for gear storage and features a mesh gear pocket and flap to run an extension cord through (we suggest Coleman’s E-port tent power cable), so that your phone, battery packs or CPAP machine can be powered directly from its cord.
Coleman tents offer simple camping experience at an economical price point, making them an excellent option for occasional campers or those seeking a cost-cutting tent solution. However, for more challenging camping conditions or shorter car camping trips or overnighter at outdoor festivals and concerts we have other picks which may better fit. However, the Sundome may also make an excellent weekend car camping tent option and sleepover at outdoor concerts, although its ventilation capacity limits its suitability to mild climate conditions.
4. Kelty Wireless
The Kelty Wireless is an impressive budget tent that performs similarly to more costly options in terms of performance. Featuring good headroom, an expansive vestibule and ample storage space for gear, it is quick and simple to set up. However, due to a limited mesh area and fiberglass poles which may succumb to harsh weather, its ventilation could suffer significantly compared to more premium tents.
Still, this tent is an excellent option for car camping, accommodating four adults comfortably and offering easy setup thanks to color-coded pole sleeves at each corner that make setup simple. Plus it stands up well against wind, rain and snow; although not light enough for backpacking or other backcountry uses.
5. Montana 8P
Coleman Montana 8P Tent is an ideal family camping tent that’s affordably priced, provides ample room, and keeps out rain. Its sturdy frame can withstand winds up to 35 mph while its durable Bodyguard fabric will hold up season after season. Setup is effortless in just 15 minutes using their pin-and-ring system and snag-free pole sleeves – plus there’s even an adjustable pin-and-ring system!
An awning over the door provides extra wind protection, and its hinged door opens wide for easy entry and exit. Coleman also provides its WeatherTec system – featuring welded floors with protected seams, as well as windows designed to let in light but block rain when open – plus spacious interior accommodating three queen-sized airbeds with gear storage pockets.
