The REI Co-op Skyward 6 comfortably accommodates a twin mat and two single mattresses with plenty of extra space, while Eureka Space Camp 6 provides even more livable space within a similar footprint. Both models provide excellent storage, ventilation, and fun floor designs – something the other doesn’t quite manage!
Upgraded features, such as a full-coverage rainfly and strong aluminum pole designs, extend a tent’s longevity and functionality. However, premium models tend to be heavier and cost more.
Budget Tents
If you’re a backpacker looking to save some money on their next journey, this tent can’t be beat – one of the lightest two-person backpacking tents we tested.
The Kelty Wireless 2P dome design is an economical, no-frills dome antenna with sturdy construction that’s capable of withstanding moderate winds while remaining footprint-free for easy setup on rough or sandy terrain.
Our tests showed the Mineral King 3’s hubbed pole structure was capable of withstanding 32-mph wind gusts while its 68-denier, PU-coated polyester fly was waterproof during rain showers in Colorado. Unfortunately, its porches were small, leaving less room for cooking or storing gear. For something more rugged and versatile like six person camping trips the Mountain Hardwear Bridger 6 is another viable solution with pentagonal doors and two brow poles to provide multidirectional wind and rain resistance and more storage space than its predecessor – more durable design with improved features over all these models as well.
Mid-Range Tents
In this category we feature tents which make concessions in order to pack easily and light weight, yet still provide enjoyable camping experiences in pleasant weather and moderate winds. Although they’re still spacious enough for camping trips, these models may not provide as much comfort or space compared to a full backpacking tent.
These structures usually take the shape of a basic dome with steep walls and roof to better channel wind-driven rain or snow away from them, often using lighter materials such as ripstop nylon and DAC aluminum poles for construction.
For two people seeking an easy tent that will withstand inclement weather conditions, the Marmot Tungsten 4 tent is an excellent option. Featuring high ceilings and ample vestibule storage space, its design also includes features that make for convenient gear management. However, Big Agnes Blacktail 2 provides many of these same great designs at a more reasonable cost; featuring all-mesh roof construction that provides mild breeze protection or can even be rolled up when faced with rainy days.
Premium Tents
An essential part of outdoor adventure is establishing a comfortable basecamp and tent to sleep in. At Outdoor Gear Lab, we conducted real-world tests with tents so you can select one suitable for restful rest after hiking, biking or climbing in the great outdoors.
The North Face Wawona 6 can sleep six people comfortably; however, if you’re willing to invest a bit more, REI’s Wonderland 6 offers superior livability thanks to near vertical walls and high ceilings, color-coded components for fast setup, and plenty of storage for sleeping bags, air mattresses and other gear.
Mountain Hardwear’s Mineral King 3 tent is another family favorite. Though more costly than the Wawona, its large peak height and spacious vestibule provide you with significant increases in livability, as does its easy to clean tarp floor which stands up well to summer storms and high winds.
Best Value Tents
No matter your budget or level of backpacking experience, there are great value tents that provide ample shelter without breaking the bank. One such tent is REI Co-op Skyward 4 tent; its semi-geodesic design – two long poles crossed at their top by shorter brow poles – stands up well to multidirectional wind and rain as we found during testing.
The North Face Wawona 6 tent features a strong inner with fantastic fly vents to eliminate breezes quickly, as well as easy setup. Though more costly, its superior combination of living space and smart design – such as massive outside storage areas to store air mattresses, gear and bikes – more than makes up for its slightly higher cost. Plus its durable DAC pressfit aluminum poles and 68D ripstop polyester mesh ensure it remains an enduring dome-style tent!
