When searching for the ideal cooler, one that strikes an optimal balance among capacity, ice retention, portability and price is RTIC’s 52-quart Ultra-Light model. It ticks every one of those boxes.
Make sure the cooler has uniform thickness for optimal ice retention, seating or footstool use and bear proof certifications. Rotomolded coolers typically provide superior ice retention as well as double as a seat or footstool when necessary. Some even boast certifications indicating they can withstand attempts by bears at forcing entry!
Bear-Proof
Camping in areas inhabited by bears requires adhering to food storage guidelines, especially when leaving food unattended in coolers or trash cans. A mere glimpse can trigger their natural instinct to investigate, prompting an attack by one.
Yeti and RCTIC both produce IGBC-certified bear-resistant coolers to keep both campers and wildlife safe during camping trips. These rotomolded models typically feature reinforced lids with locking tabs to secure padlocks securely, and have enough capacity for your food and beverages.
Another versatile choice is the Xspec, which may not be IGBC certified but offers easy masterlock usage and compatibility with most brand locks. Furthermore, my tests found it had one of the best insulation ratings and featured an ideal removable basket to store fragile items safely and discreetly. Although not cheap, this solution offers great versatility at an excellent value point.
Durability
Heavy-duty camping coolers feature durable construction of high-density polyethylene with rotomolded design, reinforced corners and hinges, sturdy latches and great ice retention capabilities. In addition, many come equipped with extra features to enhance your trip such as second internal basket that doubles as table or bench seating, internal light source or even free apps to allow remote monitoring and control from mobile phones.
For those who appreciate classic aesthetics, the steel-belted Coleman Retro Style cooler provides an updated version of an old favorite. Its tall interior space, molded ruler and convenient built-in air release button makes this product both practical and aesthetic.
Yeti Tundra 65 and Yeti Roadie 24 are our go-to models when it comes to durability, featuring T-grip latches that feel tough enough for years of rough use. Other great options are Xspec 60qt and Engel’s hybrid plastic/rubber latches which require less muscle power but still feel robust enough for daily use.
Two-Handled
No matter if it’s for an afternoon trip to the beach or weekend camping adventure, heavy-duty coolers must be lightweight and easy to transport while providing adequate insulation to keep food and drinks cold for days on end.
Many models do just that. For instance, YETI’s Wheeled Roadie features a telescoping handle that extends up to nearly 3.5 feet – high enough for most people to grab comfortably.
Pelican, known for manufacturing gear for the military, now offers camping coolers that are both comfortable and durable enough for any terrain. Their ergonomic handles are perfectly positioned to offer leverage while still offering adequate clearance clearance.
Goat’s Hub model from Texas takes an unconventional approach, featuring built-in storage slots along the sides that work in conjunction with their unique Cans (four are included). This system makes it possible to store delicate foods safely away from freezing conditions; other brands, including Engel, Orca and RTIC are now starting to implement similar features in their coolers.
Wheels
Coolers equipped with wheels make them much simpler to manage and steer. Although wheeled coolers may increase costs overall, their added mobility could make it worth your while if you plan on engaging in extensive walking activities and require something easily transportable.
The Yeti Tundra Haul Wheeled Cooler stands out as one of the best we’ve tested, providing all of Yeti’s durability and ice retention while offering top-of-the-line handles and wheels. Surprisingly easy to maneuver even when loaded up with food, drinks, and ice, even with its telescopic handle at its tallest setting!
The Pelican Elite cooler is designed for long-term use with features like corrosion-resistant hardware and molded grab handles that ensure its long service life. Available in 20-quart and 250-quart models for day trips and extended camping excursions or parties respectively. Though slightly bulkier than other options, its interior provides plenty of space for food, drinks, and ice.
