EDGEFIELD, S.C. — In December, the NWTF South Carolina Women in the Outdoors Chapter organized a deer hunt at the NWTF headquarters in Edgefield, South Carolina.

The event welcomed seven women for an afternoon of hunting, kicking off with a Deer Hunting 101 course presented by the South Carolina Wildlife Partnership. Officers from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources also provided insights into the state’s rules and regulations.

Each lady participating in the hunt received a goodie bag filled with merchandise, including a slate call, Women in the Outdoors pens, Chapstick, decals, a tumbler cup, HotHands and more. Additionally, Her Wilderness, a provider of outdoor adventure and travel experiences tailored for women, supplied a Chick-fil-A lunch during the event.

One of the standout moments was participant Teresa Brazwell’s first-time hunting experience, mentored by her son, Hunter. Using her father’s rifle, Teresa successfully harvested two bucks and expressed her gratitude for the opportunity.

“Thank you so much for the opportunity to hunt for the first time,” Teresa said. “I don’t know who was more excited, my dad or me. Thank you again.”

Another first-time hunter, Tessa Tugo, was also successful in harvesting her first buck. Prior to this, she participated in the ladies’ dove hunt in September, where she successfully harvested her first dove.

“Thanks so much for everything and everyone involved,” Tugo said. “This community has changed my life in the best way! Thank God for all of you!”

The demand for these activities among women has been increasing, and the NWTF has been at the forefront of engaging and being a resource for this growing segment of hunters. The WITO program is an effective initiative to retain lifelong hunters by engaging and educating women about the great outdoors.

“Thank you to all those that support Hunting Heritage Banquets throughout the year,” said Billie McCarter, South Carolina NWTF State Chapter board member. “You all are the reason we can put on events like this. We are introducing individuals to hunting, teaching them about safety, conservation and giving back. The efforts are dedicated to nurturing the next generation of hunters and ensuring the continuation of our cherished hunting traditions.”

The NWTF South Carolina Women in the Outdoors Chapter is eagerly anticipating the next exciting event—a Women’s Day Brunch scheduled for Saturday, March 2, 2024, at the Livery Stable in Abbeville, South Carolina.
