Coolers are one of the essential pieces of outdoor gear. Their sturdy construction should withstand constant unpacking, hauling around at camp sites and occasional drops without succumbing to wear-and-tear damage.
Consider coolers constructed of rotomolded material and featuring StrongArm handles made of welded aluminum for optimal durability, and with wheels for effortless transport across rough terrain.
YETI Tundra Haul Hard Cooler
Yeti has created one of the toughest rotomolded coolers we reviewed, featuring all the features you would expect from one. You’ll get insulation approved by grizzly bears, nonslip Bearfoot feet to ensure stability, Anchorpoint tie-down slots for strapping down, leakproof Vortex drain system, as well as an easy opening mechanism requiring just one hand and convenient hinge that won’t overextend – making opening it with one hand while holding a beer easy!
GearJunkie’s testers found that this cooler successfully kept ice frozen for days even on an outdoor camping trip where temperatures reached the 90s, thanks to PermaFrost insulation which uses pressure-injected commercial-grade polyurethane foam in its walls and lid to retain cold.
The Tundra Haul is the inaugural wheeled cooler from YETI, taking their legendary toughness and insulation power one step further. Equipped with NeverFlat tires for smooth transport over rough terrain and an aluminum arm with comfortable grips to carry, its NeverFlat tires should never let you down – although be wary when transporting over soft surfaces such as sand as its wheels could leave marks behind!
YETI Hopper Flip
The Hopper Flip soft cooler is designed for tough use on golf courses and will keep your beverages colder than plastic bags, which some courses frown upon and may rupture their forehead veins if seen bringing one in.
Hopper Flip stands out from other soft coolers by using closed-cell rubber foam insulation, which provides superior cold-holding capabilities over ordinary insulators. Furthermore, its 100% leakproof zipper resembles those found on drysuits and its durable DryHide Shell is resistant to mildew growth, punctures, UV radiation and water ingress.
No matter your adventure needs – from solo camping trips to parking lot get-togethers – this cooler is sure to come in handy and has an extensive range of accessories so it can grow with you and adapt accordingly.
RovR RollR 45
RovR’s RollR 45 cooler was created specifically with individuals and smaller groups in mind, yet does not lack in quality or capability of other coolers in their lineup – including its impressive all-terrain wheels.
Rotomolded cooler with thick insulation and durable rubber latches. Tie-down slots and long T handle. Certified as bearproof. Perfect for camping trips!
RovR does an admirable job at addressing all the drawbacks associated with lesser wheeled coolers; however, its price tag of $400 makes it the most costly wheeled cooler we tested. This higher cost is partially explained by RovR’s inclusion of accessories such as its Wagon Bin and dry storage tray in its base model, unlike Yeti which does not provide such useful components with their nonwheeled coolers; yeti does offer an optional cart accessory at $130 should one be desired.
RovR RollR 60
At times you come across products that represent the pinnacle of design in their category. Such is the case with RovR RollR 60 wheeled cooler; featuring all of the amenities expected from high-end coolers (rotomolded construction and thick rubber latches among others), but also offering some unique features to make transporting it to campsites simpler.
Its key feature is its oversized wheels, which make navigating rocks, roots and sand easy. The handle swings up for easy dragging although its reach doesn’t extend far requiring you to hunch over to use it effectively.
The RollR is also equipped with some optional accessories: an expandable bin for blankets, chairs and bags of Ruffles that collapses into a comfortable seat pad; and a tow arm designed to connect with bikes so they can pedal it to remote sites where cars cannot access.
